# Geekom A9 Mega vs Minisforum MS-S1 Max

By [David Wilson](https://testbenchlab.com/authors/david-wilson/). Updated 2026-10-02. Our pick: Geekom A9 Mega.

## Short answer

Geekom A9 Mega is our preference for a single-user local AI workstation. Choose Minisforum MS-S1 Max instead when 10GbE or internal expansion is a requirement you can use, rather than a specification you might want later.

| Workload | Recommended choice |
|---|---|
| Single-user local workstation | Geekom A9 Mega |
| Defined 10GbE or internal-card requirement | Minisforum MS-S1 Max |
| Basic chat inference | Prioritise usable memory and backend |

## Same chip: so what is different?

Both can be configured around Max+ 395, but their surrounding hardware serves different priorities. A9 Mega is our desktop starting point; MS-S1 Max adds infrastructure-oriented features. Match RAM, SSD and CPU suffix so the offer reflects the workstation you actually intend to buy.

## Do you need 10GbE and a PCIe slot?

A faster network helps if datasets or clients move enough data and the rest of the network supports it. Internal expansion helps when a compatible card fits a defined task. Neither feature automatically accelerates a model already loaded into memory.

## Which should you buy?

Choose A9 Mega for the general role. Choose MS-S1 Max for a genuine expansion or network requirement. Our Geekom preference does not override compatibility: a required interface can be a better reason to buy than an overall brand verdict.
