# Geekom A9 Mega review: Strix Halo for local AI

## Verdict

Geekom A9 Mega is our preferred Geekom for larger local AI workloads. Its Strix Halo platform is a different proposition from A9 Max: a larger shared-memory graphics system, rather than simply a faster version of the same compact desktop.

This researched assessment uses published specifications. It does not claim a first-hand laboratory test; the Testbench score is an editorial rating, not a measurement.

## Running large local models on the A9 Mega

A9 Mega’s appeal is loading larger quantised models without depending on a modest discrete card’s VRAM. Model fit still depends on the memory allocated to the accelerator and the context requested. Start with a smaller test and confirm offload before attempting a demanding session.

## Max+ 395 vs Max+ 388 versions

The processor suffix matters. AMD’s Max+ 395 has more CPU cores than Max+ 388, while both belong to the higher graphics tier. Check the exact offer rather than assuming the Mega name identifies one processor. Choose 395 for broader CPU work when the premium is justified.

## How much of the 128GB can the GPU use?

The advertised system capacity is not dedicated VRAM. Firmware and driver settings determine the region made available to the integrated GPU, and the operating system still needs room. Check the runtime’s reported memory instead of assuming the entire installed amount is available to model weights.

## Noise, thermals and power

A larger model can occupy the system for an extended period. Provide ventilation and choose a power profile that suits the desk environment. We do not attach a fabricated tokens-per-second, dBA or wall-power value to the recommendation.

## Ports and networking

Geekom lists dual 2.5GbE, USB4 and two M.2 storage positions for A9 Mega. Those connections suit a single-user workstation and fast external storage. A workload built around 10GbE or internal expansion can be a reason to choose another machine despite our Geekom preference.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much VRAM does the Geekom A9 Mega have?

It uses shared system memory, not a separate bank of dedicated VRAM. The GPU-visible amount depends on the configuration and allocation settings.

### Can the Geekom A9 Mega run a 70B model?

A suitable high-memory configuration can hold some quantised 70B workloads. Backend, context and memory allocation determine fit and speed.

### What is the difference between Ryzen AI Max+ 395 and 388?

Max+ 395 provides more CPU cores. Both use the stronger Strix Halo graphics tier; check the exact specifications and memory configuration.
